Marijuana ruins teeth

02/09/2008

Smoking marijuana leads to oral diseases - this is the conclusion reached by experts from the University of Otago in New Zealand. They managed to identify a link between smoking "weed" and periodontal diseases.

A study by New Zealand dentists included 900 people who smoked cannabis more than 40 times a year, starting at age 18. It turned out that marijuana was responsible for a third of cases of dental and gum disease in people aged 26-32.

Scientists say marijuana has a negative physiological effect on the gums and, as a result, on the teeth, as it affects the immune function of the body. Smoke, getting into the mouth, penetrates the tissues and cells and affects the peripheral blood flow in the gums. As a result, inflammation occurs, which can lead to tooth loss.

It is worth noting that this is the first study in which specialists focused on the effect of marijuana on gums. Previously, the main cause of inflammation of the oral cavity was associated with smoking tobacco. The study was somewhat complicated by the fact that many people who smoke marijuana also smoke regular cigarettes. But even taking this circumstance into account, scientists were able to prove that heavy users of "weed" are at greater risk than regular smokers.
