Dutch police banned from smoking marijuana

The Dutch police union is outraged by a new government decision that bans officers from using marijuana while off duty.

The new job description says police officers must be "good moral role models" for their fellow citizens.

The ban comes into force on January 1 and police chiefs are racking their brains over how to enforce it.

Amsterdam's police chief explains that until now, instructions have prohibited police officers from using drugs or alcohol while on duty, but "we now explain to officers that they must behave like police officers at all times."

Gnans von Dujin, chairman of the police union, says: "Many union members are unhappy with this decision. They don't get paid for 24 hours a day. What they do in their free time is their own business."
