Dutch politicians call for legalization of soft drugs

A group of former and current Dutch politicians are calling for a more flexible soft drugs policy and are calling on the Dutch Prime Minister to push for new international treaties on the issue.

According to the authors of the appeal, the agreements concluded in the sixties hinder further easing of the policy on soft drugs. They advocate allowing not only the use of drugs from cannabis, but also their production. The Dutch government has so far rejected such proposals, citing international agreements. In this regard, politicians declare the need to amend previously concluded agreements. The appeal is connected with the upcoming international conference on drug policy under the auspices of the UN in 2008.
