Federal Drug Control Service found 70 drug dealer websites on RuNet

The Federal Drug Control Service, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB, has identified over 70 Russian-language websites on the Internet offering drugs, RIA Novosti reports, citing the agency’s director, Oleg Kharichkin.

In 2007, Russian drug police opened several dozen criminal cases against drug dealers who were distributing drugs via the Internet, Interfax reports. Kharichkin admitted that the schemes that criminals resort to are quite inventive and complex.

In Russia, about six million people regularly use drugs. According to Kharichkin, before 2002, the number of drug addicts increased by 20-25 percent per year. Currently, their number is growing by only 0.05 percent per year. Kharichkin emphasized that the average age of drug addicts is not decreasing, which is also a positive sign.

In August 2007, a lieutenant colonel of the State Drug Control Service was arrested. According to the service's own security department, he was selling drugs via the Internet. He was helped in this by a close relative, from whom more than a kilogram of heroin was seized.

Police announced they would begin searching for drugs on the Internet in late 2006.
