Cannabis exhibition underway in Madrid suburb

In one of the suburbs of Madrid - Leganés - the hemp exhibition "Expocannabis 2007" is taking place with the participation of 70 enterprises and public organizations from different European countries. The exhibition presents various types of hemp and equipment for its processing, as well as food products and industrial goods made from it: beer, medicines, fabrics, paper, shoes and biomass for fuel. The purpose of the exhibition, organized with the assistance of the municipality of Leganés, is to prove that hemp is a useful plant.

The exhibition, held at the Municipal Cultural Centre, features representatives of various Spanish NGOs that advocate the legalisation of cannabis (marijuana and hashish) as a drug: Friends of Maria (marijuana), Cannabis Café, Dolce Vita and Global Cannabis. According to the organisers, many NGOs in Spain and other European countries advocate the legal sale of cannabis as a drug, as such legalisation would put an end to illegal drug trafficking and the drug mafia.

During the exhibition, a forum "On the medicinal properties of cannabis" will be held with the participation of representatives from Holland, where its sale as a drug is legalized. In particular, the forum will discuss the demand for the European Parliament to legalize the sale of cannabis in 2008.
