Dutch authorities decide fate of hallucinogenic mushrooms10/14/2007
The Dutch government has decided to ban the sale of hallucinogenic mushrooms after several incidents involving tourists who used them, the BBC reports. The Dutch government is famous for its liberal attitude towards drugs; marijuana is sold there legally in cafes that have the appropriate license. According to the representative of the Dutch Ministry of Justice, Wim van der Weegen, the ban on the sale of hallucinogenic mushrooms will come into effect in a few months. Shops found selling them will be closed. Now in the Netherlands the sale of only dried “magic” mushrooms is prohibited, since the concentration of hallucinogenic substances in them is higher than in fresh ones. However, the amount of these substances in fresh mushrooms is difficult to determine. "The problem with mushrooms is that their effects are unpredictable," says van der Weegen. "It's impossible to estimate what effect will be achieved by consuming a certain amount of mushrooms." Calls to reconsider the use of "magic" mushrooms have intensified after a 17-year-old French girl who visited Amsterdam with her classmates in March this year jumped to her death from a rooftop. An Icelandic tourist jumped from a balcony and broke both his legs, and a Danish tourist drove his car through a campsite and narrowly missed running over sleeping tourists. Chloe Collett, owner of the Amsterdam shop FullMoon, which sells hallucinogenic mushrooms, believes the media is blowing the issue out of proportion. She believes the victims were taking the mushrooms along with other drugs. Marat Koukuksen, whose farm supplies about half of all the "magic" mushrooms in the Netherlands, says he will lose millions of euros as a result of the ban. People who use "magic" mushrooms, in addition to hallucinations, experience fits of laughter, and their perception of colors and sounds becomes more acute. Among the negative side effects are vomiting and a feeling of anxiety.
