A teaching assistant at a British school has been sentenced to 200 hours of community service for supplying her own children with marijuana, The Times reports.

According to the publication, some time ago, 43-year-old Nicola Cooper caught her children - a 16-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son - smoking cannabis. After that, Cooper decided to supply her children with marijuana herself in order to protect them from contact with drug dealers. According to Cooper, she smoked "weed" from time to time and the drug was always in their house.

In June 2007, the teacher was unexpectedly visited by police with a search warrant, during which they found a bag containing 116 grams of cannabis worth about £200. Nicola Cooper was forced to resign from the school and face prosecution.

The judge initially wanted to impose a suspended prison sentence, but took into account that Cooper gave the drugs to the children because she was concerned for their welfare, and not for commercial purposes. As a result, the teacher was sentenced to a £60 fine and community service.

After the verdict, Cooper told reporters that she still believed she had done the right thing, but her family would not smoke the drug again. Marijuana is supposed to help you relax, but that is hard to do when the police could come busting through the door at any minute, Cooper said.
