American scientists demand marijuana

American scientists intend to go to court - they accuse the country's government of violating federal law. We are talking about permission to use marijuana for medical purposes, that is, for the development and production of medicines.

"The National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is part of the Department of Health, has a monopoly on marijuana research," says Lyle Kracker, head of the Herbal Medicines Program.

A District of Columbia court will hear charges filed against the Drug Enforcement Administration and the National Institutes of Health. "Every day is a struggle for patients," say scientists studying the use of a controversial plant, "as our government, instead of helping us ease their suffering, creates new obstacles every time."

The lawsuit also cites "undue delay" in obtaining permission to grow marijuana for research at the University of Massachusetts. The researchers are also seeking permission to import 10 grams of marijuana from Denmark for a chemistry lab in Canton.
