FSKN: Energy drinks contain psychotropic substances

The Russian Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) will test energy drinks for the content of psychotropic substances that can harm their consumers. This was stated today by Deputy Director of the Federal Drug Control Service Vladimir Zubrin.

According to him, energy drinks are a kind of drug. "According to our experts, energy drinks that are freely available contain psychotropic substances that cause a state of mild drug intoxication and are harmful to health," said V. Zubrin.

As he noted, the Federal Drug Control Service is working with the Ministry of Health and Social Development to ensure that the ministry gives its assessment of these drinks and a conclusion on the harm of the substances they contain. Based on the results of the inspection, a decision may be made up to and including a ban on the import and sale of "energy drinks" in the Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, in France, Denmark and Norway, energy drinks are banned from being sold in grocery stores. They are only available in pharmacies, as they are considered a medicine.

In Russia, some time ago, attempts were made to restrict the sale of these drinks. In the spring of 2005, a bill "On the ban on the sale and distribution of drinks containing tonic components" was introduced to the State Duma. It was preceded by a decree of the chief sanitary doctor of Russia Gennady Onishchenko "On strengthening supervision of drinks containing tonic components." However, the bill was rejected.

All energy drinks contain caffeine, taurine, which is an amino acid produced in muscles and supplied to the body with food, and carotene, a natural component of human cells that reduces fatigue. Energy drinks may also contain guarana and ginseng extracts and other plant substances.

Such drinks are contraindicated for pregnant women, children, people suffering from hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, glaucoma, sleep disorders, people with increased excitability, etc.
