A drug police training center has opened in Domodedovo, Moscow Region

Russian Interior Minister General of the Army Rashid Nurgaliev and Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble took part in the opening ceremony of a regional training center under the auspices of Interpol in the Moscow region town of Domodedovo for training employees involved in combating illegal drug trafficking.

According to the Public Relations Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, the center opened on the basis of the International Interdepartmental Training Center for Criminal Police and Anti-Drug Trafficking Units named after Lieutenant General of Police A.N. Sergeev of the Military Training Complex of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, which annually trains more than 2 thousand employees law enforcement agencies of Russia and more than 200 foreign specialists from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Armenia, Belarus, Vietnam, Germany and other countries.

The new training centre will provide training for employees of the National Central Bureau of Interpol at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia and its branches, operational officers of Russian law enforcement agencies and other Interpol member states involved in combating illegal drug trafficking.

R. Nurgaliev emphasized that the creation of a regional training center on the basis of the Military-Industrial Complex is due to the joint intention to reduce drug trafficking, including by training professional police personnel from the countries of the Central Asian region.

During the conversation, the parties positively assessed the interaction between Russian law enforcement agencies and the Interpol General Secretariat. Over the past four years, the exchange of information between them has increased more than fourfold (from 1,336 messages in 2003 to 5,534 in 2006). According to information from Russian law enforcement agencies, the following have been registered in the Interpol General Secretariat databases: over 4,000 individuals, including 1,109 wanted defendants and convicts, 174 missing persons; about 250,000 cars stolen in Russia; about 1,000 works of art and antiques stolen in Russia. During the Russian Federation's membership in Interpol (i.e. since September 1990), over 220 wanted defendants and convicts have been detained abroad and extradited to Russia. More than 20,000 vehicles from among those wanted by foreign countries through Interpol channels have been found, more than 200 works of art and icons, and about 3,000 archival documents have been returned to their rightful Russian owners.

R. Nurgaliev and R. Noble also visited the Center for training employees of internal affairs bodies and military personnel of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. The Center trains employees for participation in peacekeeping missions and employees in the field of transport security.
