Kyiv to March for Irresponsible Marijuana Smoking

On May 5, a "Freedom March" will be held in Kyiv, the participants of which will demand the abolition of criminal liability for the use of soft drugs. This was stated today at a press conference by the press attaché of the action, Taras Ratushny.

"We are not advocating for legalization, but for decriminalization of consumption," Ratushny emphasized.

According to him, the May action will be "almost the only march with unpaid crowds."

Taras Ratushny also explained that about 80% of all those convicted of drug-related crimes end up in prison for using marijuana. At the same time, drug dealers remain unpunished, the organizer of the action claims.

The head of the Kyiv city organization of UNA-UNSO, Igor Mazur, who was present at the press conference, agreed with the organizers of the "March of Freedom".

"It is necessary to take away from the attack those who use drugs individually," Mazur believes.

According to Mazur, a criminal sentence for possession of 5 grams of marijuana is unacceptable.

"There is community service," Mazur emphasized.

However, the vice-president of the civil association "Movement of Parents against Immorality" Valery Kravchenko, who participated in the press conference, did not agree with its other participants.

"If the world is going mad, it doesn't mean that Ukraine should be in the front ranks," he said. Valeriy Kravchenko also added that there are currently about 1.5 million drug addicts in Ukraine, and there is a tendency for their number to grow.
