Marijuana treats obesity

In the second half of 2007, a UK clinic will test an anti-obesity drug based on the active components of marijuana, MedPortal reports. .

As envisaged by the clinic, the new drug will suppress hunger in overweight and obese patients.

It is also important that one of the side effects of the narcotic effect of marijuana is increased appetite. However, as GW Pharmaceuticals Managing Director Justin Goyer explained, among the 70 varieties of cannabinoids contained in this plant, there are substances that have the exact opposite effect.

Marijuana plants grown in GW Pharmaceuticals greenhouses located in the UK will be used as raw materials for the production of the new drug. The exact location of the greenhouses is carefully hidden.

The drug will have to undergo three stages of clinical trials, after which regulatory authorities in the US, EU and other countries will decide on its approval. Thus, the process of bringing the drug to market could take many years.

Currently, GW Pharmaceuticals' best-known product is Sativex, a pain reliever for patients with multiple sclerosis. This painkiller is an oral spray and also contains active marijuana components.
