Christmas Marijuana Cakes

You won’t find these cannoli (small Italian cream pastries) in any cafe in Manhattan’s Tribeca or Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst. We are talking about cannoli that Nassau County Jail guard Rocco Bove tried to give to one of the inmates of this correctional facility on Christmas Eve.

Bove arrived at the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow, bringing a box of cannoli with him. He asked the guard on duty to give the Christmas present to an inmate he knew. But after Bove left, one of the guards couldn't resist trying the tempting treat. Imagine his surprise when he realized that the cake he bit into was generously laced with... marijuana.

The remainder of the tube was sent to a crime lab for analysis, which confirmed that the cream pie was indeed laced with the drug.
Bove was arrested on charges of promoting prison contraband and illegal possession of marijuana and released on $10,500 bail pending trial. Prosecutors had argued for higher bail, citing Bove's role as a prison guard and the fact that the package contained three illegal items in addition to the marijuana brownies: rolling papers, matches, and flint.

Benedict Gullo, Bove's lawyer, said his client was the victim of misconduct by his colleagues. Rules governing the distribution of food and other items to inmates were violated, protocol was not in place and marijuana may have been planted in the brownie.
