Marijuana for "gourmets"21.12.2006
A gang of 29 drug dealers has been arrested in New York. And there would be nothing special about this event, if not for the type of drug they were distributing, the level of technology used by the gang, and the financial status of the buyers. The latter are very wealthy people, because they meekly paid $560 for an ounce of marijuana. But what kind of marijuana is this that costs such crazy money? Called Purple Haze in connoisseur circles, it is produced from barely blossoming buds of the plant, which provides it with a special composition that gives smokers a certain high known only to them. This marijuana was produced in greenhouses in Florida and brought to New York in trailers.
The gang operated mainly in Upper Manhattan, in the area of Post Avenue and Dyckman Street, which attracted marijuana “gourmets” from all five boroughs of New York, as well as from Connecticut, Southern New Jersey, and Long Island. The operation to arrest the criminals was carried out here and in Miami jointly by the Manhattan Drug Enforcement Division and FBI agents. Among those arrested was the gang leader, 26-year-old Orlando Torres, who took over the gang after his predecessor, Edward Meran, was shot dead in Washington Heights in January 2005. The latter was a legendary figure here, a sort of local John Gotti. He used the money he earned to sponsor basketball teams and even organized a local basketball league. The look of the Smenshchina is somewhat different - almost a caricature of a drug dealer, hung from head to toe in gold and diamonds. But he knows his business well and uses modern technology in the usual showdowns for his circle. Police say, for example, that $90,000 was once stolen from the apartment of a confidant of Torres. "Interrogating suspected gang members with knives to the throat and torture is what is usually used in such cases," says one of the leaders of the arrest operation, Bridget Brennan. "But Torres hired a lie detector expert from New Jersey and tested everyone. No one in the criminal world has ever done that." Having thus achieved complete subjugation of the gang, Orlando Torres was able to dramatically increase the scale of its activities. During his two years of rule, the volume of supply and sale of "purple haze" in New York increased to 1000 pounds per week. And it is understandable why law enforcement agencies so energetically took on the distributors of what seemed to be not the most dangerous drug.
