Prague fog is like dope12/15/2006
If we are to believe the latest sociological research, the title of "drug capital of Europe", which Amsterdam used to hold, has now been firmly taken over by Prague. According to the survey, 22% of the Czech capital's residents regularly smoke marijuana, and another third do it from time to time. And indeed, as practice shows, you can buy "weed" on every corner, and the police simply turn a blind eye to its use. This is how experts explain the growth of so-called drug tourism in Prague.
Of course, there are no "cafe-shops" (shops where marijuana is legally sold. - "NI") in Prague - the law does not allow it. However, so-called "grow-shops" are scattered throughout the city - shops that are somewhat reminiscent of the hardware stores familiar to Russians. With only one difference - you can buy a strictly limited set of tools here - everything you need to grow marijuana, from ventilation systems to seeds and fertilizers. This type of "gardening" is not limited by law in any way - grow as much as you like, just do not sell. By the way, if we are to believe the same Czech sociologists, the number of marijuana smokers in the country has long exceeded the number of those who prefer to poison themselves with traditional tobacco. The drug mafia offers its services to the lazy and tourists – street sellers have literally occupied the alleys of the Old Town, vying with each other to offer “weed” and hashish to passers-by. However, locals do not recommend dealing with street dealers – they often simply deceive the buyer, and sometimes they can rob. By the way, almost no one sells so-called “hard” drugs on the street – if the police turn a blind eye to marijuana, then their attitude to powders and tablets is not so loyal. Not long ago, a trial ended in Prague against a cocaine seller, who was found to have 3 grams of “white death” when arrested. He was found guilty and received a rather serious punishment by local standards – 5 years in prison. And marijuana smokers do not bother local law enforcement officers at all - the police simply ignore them. For example, one of the author's friends rolled a cigarette with "weed" on a bet and smoked it 10 meters from a parked police car, demonstrating to the cops with his whole appearance that he was the one smoking. Their reaction was unexpected - seeing that it was the disputant who was smoking, the police preferred not to disturb him and simply drove away from the parking lot. An equally illustrative case happened to a famous Italian film producer who arrived in the Czech Republic for negotiations. The man, who suffered from glaucoma, was recommended by Italian doctors to smoke marijuana – it supposedly relieves tension and generally eases the patient’s suffering. And the producer, when leaving for the Czech Republic, simply forgot to take the bag of weed out of his bag, where it was discovered by vigilant Czech customs officers. Of course, they had no tolerance for the “smuggler” – suspicions of an attempt to illegally import 5 grams of marijuana into the country dissipated only after the man showed them a prescription for the purchase of weed written out by his attending physician. At this point, the incident was exhausted, and at parting, one of the customs officers addressed the foreigner in a friendly manner, saying: “Why did you bring this across two borders? We have plenty of this stuff here!” Czech drug experts are unhappy with this “idyll” - according to them, in 2-3 years an epidemic of heroin addiction may begin in the country - this is precisely the result that the legalization of soft drugs has led to in Holland, where the rules for the use of legal drugs are gradually becoming more and more stringent. Dr. Martin Paroubek, who runs one of the drug addiction treatment clinics located in the suburbs of Prague, has seen from his own experience that the popularization of marijuana currently taking place in the Czech Republic has already led to an increase in the number of patients in his clinic. “The algorithm is simple - eight out of ten people, having tried marijuana, do not stop and over time begin to use stronger drugs. This whole experiment ends with heroin, and it’s almost impossible to get rid of such an addiction,” he told a NI correspondent.
