The capital of Uruguay was covered in a cloud of marijuana smoke

Last weekend, a cloud of marijuana smoke enveloped the center of the Uruguayan capital. In this way, about 300 people came out in favor of the legalization of this drug. The action took place calmly and without police interference, AMI-TASS reports.

The young people who took part in the action are supporters of Uruguay's left-wing parties, which have been in power since March 2005. They are seeking to start a public debate on the legalization of marijuana.

According to local laws, drug trafficking, including marijuana, carries heavy penalties, while marijuana use is not a crime. The protesters believe that such a government decision could stop the activities of illegal drug dealers.

According to the National Anti-Drug Association, marijuana use among Uruguayan teenagers aged 13 to 15 tripled between 2001 and 2003.
