Marijuana will stop you from swearing

Tourette syndrome is a serious nervous disorder. It is characterized by tics, grimacing and foul language. German scientists have found a way to significantly alleviate the suffering of patients.

Cannabis is the name of the cure for Tourette's syndrome. True, in wide circles it is better known as marijuana. The experiment carried out by scientists involved 12 volunteers. Each of them received a tablet. Some contained d9-tetrahydrocannabinol, one of the main substances in cannabis, while others were 'dummy'. For the purity of the experience, neither patients nor doctors knew what a particular person was receiving.

It soon became clear that even a single dose of the marijuana-based drug caused a noticeable reduction in the symptoms of the disease. True, tetrahydrocannabinol did not work on everyone. A repeat study confirmed the results of the first. Those who took tetrahydrocannabinol experienced a significant reduction in tics. There is evidence that indicates that plant-derived tetrahydrocannabinol is more effective than synthesized tetrahydrocannabinol. In addition, the synthetic drug has side effects.

The United States has not remained on the sidelines: scientists are now trying to use cannabis to treat Tourette syndrome, as well as AIDS. Currently, four states in the United States allow prescribing marijuana for medical purposes, but it turns out that very few doctors and patients use this opportunity. In three states – Alaska, Oregon and Hawaii – about 1% of patients use the soft drug. As a rule, these are men over 40 years old. California is the fourth state where medical marijuana is used, but it does not keep statistics on its use.

Meanwhile, the law allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana does not comply with federal law. Thus, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the ban on the distribution of marijuana. However, no one is in a hurry to apply any sanctions to those states where the use of the potion is permitted. Fierce debates about whether cannabis is beneficial or harmful continue in scientific circles. It is also unclear whether the police are hindered by the distribution of medical marijuana? Will this cause a surge in drug addiction? There is no clear answer yet.
