Marijuana remains the most widely used drug in Europe. Experts from the International Drug Enforcement Agency (IDEA) are concerned about the growth of its use among young people, RIA Novosti reports.

According to data released in Brussels in 2003, about 29% of young people in EU member states aged 15 to 24 had already tried smoking marijuana.

In France this figure was 20%, in Spain - 15%, in Great Britain - over 13%, in Denmark and Holland - 12% each.

Marijuana use is least common among young people in Austria, Greece, Luxembourg, Portugal and Sweden.

Europe also remains the world's leading producer of synthetic drugs. The largest number of clandestine ecstasy labs are located in the Netherlands, but their numbers have also increased in Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania and the Czech Republic.

In this regard, the MABN called on the authorities of current and future EU member states to tighten controls over chemicals that could be used in the production of synthetic drugs.

Experts are also concerned about the growing distribution of heroin in Central and Eastern European countries, which comes mainly from Afghanistan. Over the past two years, drug producers have harvested record opium poppy crops there.
