Voters decide fate

Oregon voters must decide this fall whether to make medical marijuana more widely available after a similar initiative to expand existing laws on hard drugs and narcotics received enough signatures in a referendum held Friday to likely place the issue on the ballot.

If the measure passes a majority of eligible voters in the state, addicts would be able to safely possess and stock up to one pound of marijuana, up from the three ounces allowed under a law passed in 1999. The measure would create a system of dispensaries that could legally provide patients with pot.

"This initiative could help create a regulated supply of medical marijuana so that patients and their caregivers can reliably and easily obtain the medication they need," said John Sajo, the sponsor of the marijuana petition.

Supporters of the initiative collected 28,500 signatures in its defense on Friday. Let us note that in order for this issue to be decided by voters, it is necessary to obtain at least 75,630 signatures of persons who have reached the age of majority.
