Lithuanians want to rehabilitate cannabis

An association of hemp producers and processors has been created in Lithuania, which is ready to fight the bad reputation unfairly attributed to this plant.

According to the association's chairman Ramūnas Rudokas (an actor by profession), hemp, which has been grown in Lithuania for centuries, has been unfairly outlawed and should return to farmers' fields.

In some EU countries, hemp is used to make fibre and biofuel, growing varieties that do not have narcotic properties. In Lithuania, however, growing the plant is prohibited under penalty of criminal liability.

According to experts, hemp is very suitable for biofuel production. In addition, it could replace flax for fiber production. Recently, this traditional agricultural crop has been disappearing from Lithuanian fields, and flax processing plants are going bankrupt one after another, unable to withstand European competition. However, their capacities could be easily adapted for processing the less demanding hemp.

The fans of hemp have already attracted many politicians and legislators to their side. But there are also opponents of this idea. As is known, craftsmen produce hashish and marijuana from hemp.

Despite laws prohibiting its cultivation, every year police confiscate several hundred kilograms of ready-made raw materials. This year alone, during preventive raids, the police destroyed poppy crops on an area of ​​5 thousand square meters and 233 square meters of hemp. 685 people were prosecuted for growing illicit crops.
