"Ale Yarok": Marijuana Will Put an End to the Arab-Israeli Conflict26.10.2006
Representatives of the Ale Yarok party, which advocates the legalization of so-called "soft" drugs, organized a forum called "The First Arab-Israeli Joint," during which they presented their alternative program for achieving peace in the Middle East. The party's activists believe that marijuana use will lead to the end of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. - Hebrew University's soil is favorable for hemp The peace initiative of the Ale Yarok (Green Leaf) party was presented at the forum, which took place today at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, but the Arabs who were supposed to represent the other side of the conflict, for some reason, decided to avoid speaking at the last minute. During the conference, information was also presented on medical research on the positive aspects of marijuana use, Ynet reports. Ale Yarok party leader Oed Shem-Tov explained the movement's peace initiative after the forum. "Young people, both Jews and Arabs, behave similarly when under the influence of marijuana," he explained. "And this similarity creates the basis for a common, similar self-identification, which is also present in the cultural aspect - in the music that is created through the use of cannabis. We believe that this will provide the basis for something that can later help achieve peace." The Ale Yarok movement's vision of the peace process was presented by many speakers during the forum. Most of them, however, did not link marijuana to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, preferring to talk about the healing properties of this plant, the need to legalize marijuana use, and their hostility toward the authorities who do not understand this need. Among the conference participants, a very notable speaker was Professor Lester Grinspoon, who had previously lectured on psychiatry at Harvard University. He is considered one of the world's leading experts on marijuana and its medical use. The professor's book, Marijuana at Second Sight, published in 1971, was intended to warn people about the negative effects of marijuana use. However, while writing the book, the professor changed his mind. "During my research, I began to think that I had been misled all these years," Grinspoon said. "I had a desire to try the drug, but out of fear that it would affect the objectivity of the study, I decided not to until the book came out." The book came out, and it caused a significant stir in society. A year and a half later, Grinspoon began smoking marijuana. "It's a very important drug," Grinspoon said. "It has enormous potential from a medical point of view. I compare it to penicillin, which was considered one of the amazing achievements of the 1940s. It's a reliable drug that never causes death, it's very cheap compared to other drugs, and it can be used against a whole range of diseases." Another forum participant, attorney Abraham Bardugo, who formerly belonged to the Black Panthers, said: "The police always pick on marijuana." According to him, the police only need a tough policy towards cannabis smokers for the sake of reporting solved crimes. "Drug cases provide 100 percent of the solved cases," he said. The forum participants refused to listen to other opinions: those who are against marijuana use. Dr. Rachel Bar-Hamburger, representing the Society for the Fight Against Drugs, asked to speak about the dangers of drugs, but she was booed. When the doctor spoke about the medical use of marijuana, several people shouted: "We don't want to hear about medicine, we are talking about cannabis here, let it be sold in all shops!" The topic of the peace initiative "Ale Yarok" turned out to be secondary at the forum, mainly because the Arab representatives refused to speak.
