Canadian soldiers fail to smoke Taliban out of cannabis thickets02.10.2006
Canadian troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan have encountered an unexpected and powerful enemy - nearly impenetrable hemp forests more than three metres high. General Rick Hillier, head of the Canadian military, said Taliban fighters were using the hemp fields as cover, preventing soldiers from capturing them, Reuters reported. According to the general, it is very difficult to drive through hemp with armored vehicles, as the plant absorbs energy and heats up very quickly. "We tried burning it with phosphorus - it didn't work. We tried burning it with diesel fuel - it didn't work. The plants contain a lot of water, so we just couldn't burn it," Hillier said. But even the successful burning of the hemp had some unpleasant consequences. "A few plants on the edge of this forest did catch fire. But the soldiers who were blown by the wind from the burning area had bad effects and decided that this was not the right way to proceed," Hillier said. Later, one soldier said to the general, "Sir, three years before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn hemp.'
