Marijuana Fights Crime

When Lambeth Police Chief Brian Paddick said law enforcement was paying too much attention to marijuana users when it wasn't worth it, many thought Paddick had lost his mind. The police chief's statement caused a lot of noise, provoked heated debate and, in the end, Paddick was removed from his post in March 2001.

However, his "crazy program" outlived him, the plan was continued by a new leader, and positive results were indeed achieved: the number of crimes in Lambeth has halved over the past six months and continues to decrease. The fact is that instead of pursuing marijuana smokers, the police have taken up more serious matters, manpower reserves have appeared, the number of patrol officers has increased, and so on.

Lambeth's current police chief, Jim Webster, declined to comment on marijuana's role in reducing crime, saying only that the issue needed serious study. He also stressed that the city's current crime situation was the result of "a concerted effort by many agencies."
