Irish man sentenced to 5 years in Greece for hashish smuggling

An Irish citizen was sentenced to five years in prison by a Greek court on Thursday for smuggling four tons of hashish , the Athens News Agency reported.

Earlier, Tommy Savage, 55, was extradited to Greece by the Netherlands, where he had lived for two decades. The Irishman was accused of attempting to carry out a daring drug smuggling operation in 1997. Savage was accused of organizing the voyage of the cargo ship Mara to Greece with four metric tons of hashish on board.

However, a Greek court found the Irishman guilty only of complicity in the crime and sentenced him to five years in prison.

Savage was known to European authorities and the press long before he was accused of drug smuggling. Savage was reportedly a member of the Irish extremist groups IRA and INLA. He also had a previous conviction for armed robbery. While living in the Netherlands, Savage became known as a major supplier marijuana and ecstasy tablets.
