Marijuana May Prevent Epilepsy

German scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry (Max-Planck-Institut fur Psychiatrie) have discovered that marijuana can prevent the onset of epilepsy in some people. Cannabis-like substances in the brain can calm overactive nerves.

The essence of the discovery is that marijuana can stimulate "innate cannabis" and control epileptic seizures. Although the tests were only conducted on animals, scientists believe that everything is almost ready for clinical trials on humans.

However, it’s a stretch to call the work of German researchers a discovery. The first mention of the use of marijuana to combat epilepsy dates back to the 15th century - an Arab author described how he used cannabis to cure his son. In the 19th century, at least one British doctor working in India used hashish to help patients.
