Drug-Related Crimes on the Rise in Russia

The number of crimes related to illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances is growing in Russia. Over the first 8 months of this year, 143 thousand such violations were registered, which is 23% more than during the same period in 2005.

According to the Director of the Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) Viktor Cherkesov, the number of registered crimes related to the illegal production, sale or shipment of drugs has increased by 16.6% compared to last year.

V. Cherkesov noted that the fight against organized forms of drug trafficking has been significantly intensified. Thus, in 2003. Law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation identified 8.6 thousand group drug crimes; in 2004. - 11 thousand, in 2005 - 12.8 thousand, and for 8 months of 2006. - 9.7 thousand crimes.

In 2005 Drug police liquidated more than 2,700 drug dens, whereas in previous years they managed to neutralize a maximum of 700 dens per year. For 8 months of 2006 2,768 drug dens were liquidated. 1,332 crimes related to the legalization (laundering) of funds received from drug trafficking were revealed.

However, the Federal Drug Control Service fears that the situation will worsen due to a possible drop in heroin prices. According to the UN, an unprecedented opiate harvest was collected in Afghanistan this year, which will undoubtedly affect the prices of hard drugs, and therefore make heroin more accessible.
