Drug production in Afghanistan has increased by 60%

03.09.2006

A significant increase in drug production in Afghanistan has been recorded by experts from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). According to the organization's executive director Antonio Costa, the area under opium poppy cultivation has increased by one and a half times this year.

In the first 8 months of 2006, the area under crops has already reached 165 thousand hectares against 104 thousand hectares the year before. Accordingly, the volumes of opium produced in 2006 are estimated by UNODC representatives at 6.1 thousand tons, which is 2 thousand tons more than in 2005. According to experts, the opium poppy grown this year is enough to produce at least 610 tons of heroin.

According to A. Costa, the majority of poppy plantations are traditionally located in the southern regions of Afghanistan. At the same time, in the Helmand province alone, where more than 40% of all Afghan opium poppy grows, its production volumes increased by 162% in 2006.

In connection with the growth of drug production in Afghanistan, the head of the UNODC called on the Afghan authorities and the command of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan to step up measures to combat the production and distribution of drugs. At the same time, A. Costa admitted that it will take about 20 years to solve this problem, reports (C) Associated Press.
