California Aims to Become US Hemp Breadbasket29.08.2006
California could become the first state to secure the right to grow industrial hemp, or Cannabis sativa. Late last week, the state legislature approved a bill allowing farmers to grow the crop, and it is now headed to Governor Schwarzenegger for his signature, The NY Times reports.
Earlier, seven states expressed their readiness to begin growing hemp on their territory. Their authorities hope to receive official permission from the US government, which supports the existing nationwide ban. The difference in the Californian project is that legislators are challenging the very right of the federal government, represented by the Drug Enforcement Administration, to control this process. California is home to a significant portion of the hemp processing industry. It produces a wide range of products from oil to fabrics and paper. However, American producers are forced to purchase raw materials abroad, in particular, in Canada, where hemp cultivation has been permitted since 1998. Schwarzenegger has 30 days to approve or veto the bill.
