7.5 thousand hectares of wild hemp destroyed in Siberia

In the Siberian Federal District (SFD), 7.5 thousand hectares of wild hemp were destroyed in 3 months during Operation Poppy 2006.

As reported on Monday by the Department of Interdepartmental Cooperation in the Sphere of Prevention and Public Relations of the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation (UFSKN) for the Siberian Federal District, drug police officers together with government agencies identified about 900 hotbeds of wild hemp growth, as well as 27 cases of illegal cultivation of prohibited drug-containing plants - 20 opium poppy crops and 7 hemp crops.

During the operation, more than 3 thousand crimes were identified and 935 people were detained.

More than half of the crimes are serious and especially serious, and 65 crimes were committed by organized criminal groups.

More than 660 kilograms of narcotics were seized from illegal circulation, of which more than 580 kilograms were marijuana.

The Administration noted that drug control agencies carried out active explanatory work in the private sectors and summer cottages of the district during Operation Poppy 2006.

Thus, "Appeals to landowners" were distributed, with information about administrative and criminal liability for failure to take measures to destroy drug-containing plants, as well as for their cultivation. And in the Kemerovo Region, a special mobile sound amplification station began operating on the territory of gardening societies.

With the help of this technology, citizens are explained the responsibility for cultivating drug-containing plants, and the drug control department's helpline is also brought to their attention.

The Directorate also reported that active assistance in identifying thickets of wild hemp during Operation Poppy 2006 was provided by Cossack societies, which were created in many regions of Siberia.

According to the Federal Drug Control Service of the Siberian Federal District, marijuana is the most common drug in the district. Thus, 85% of drugs seized by drug control agencies from illegal circulation are made from hemp, RIA Novosti reports.
