Former comrades accuse the leader of the Novosibirsk AKM of drug addiction

17.07.2006

The arrest of the leader of the Novosibirsk branch of the Avant-garde of Red Youth (AKM) Vadim Ivanov, who is accused of drug possession, is "entirely natural" and in no way connected with his political activities. This is stated in an open letter that was received by e-mail today, July 14, by the editorial board of the REGNUM news agency. The letter was signed by the Novosibirsk branch of the AKM. Ivanov himself told the REGNUM correspondent that this was a provocation by former members of the organization who were expelled for violating party discipline.

"There is not a single person in Novosibirsk interested in politics, and especially the left-wing movement, who would not know that Ivanov was a heavy drug addict," the letter says. "He used cannabis almost constantly. It is reliably known that he used heroin at least once. And if he did not have money for cannabis, he took the cough medicine glycodin, which has a pronounced psychotropic effect." The document notes that Ivanov was repeatedly seen using drugs right at the AKM headquarters and was warned that such actions discredited the organization. As a result, those people who accused Ivanov of drug addiction were "one by one" expelled from AKM. "It is noteworthy that on July 4 and 5, Ivanov used marijuana, both in the form of fried seeds and smoked, at his dacha with members of the AKM who shared his passion for dope. And on the morning of July 6, RUBOP operatives detained him with hashish in his pocket, which could well have been left over from the carousing at the dacha. So there is no need to raise a fuss and drag in Operation Zaslon and the FSB." The letter is not signed by anyone personally; in addition, there are no contact details for the senders. It is known that it was sent to all leading media outlets in the Novosibirsk Region."

In an interview with REGNUM, Vadim Ivanov called the letter a "provocation" and asked to forward it to find out from whose address it was sent. "This is slander from those members of the organization who were recently expelled from the AKM for gross violation of party discipline," Ivanov said. In addition, he reported that he was summoned on July 14 for a conversation to the Department for Combating Terrorism and Political Extremism of the UBOP GUVD of the Novosibirsk Region.

As REGNUM reported earlier, Vadim Ivanov was detained on July 6 and taken to the Kalininsky District Department of Internal Affairs in Novosibirsk. The next day, a judge in the Kalininsky District ordered his release on bail until the investigation is completed. Ivanov is suspected of possessing drugs "in large quantities" (Article 228, Part 1 of the Criminal Code, up to 3 years in prison). Ivanov claims that he was detained to prevent him from leaving Novosibirsk to participate in the "anti-summit" in St. Petersburg and "demoralize or frighten the organization."
