Marijuana or its derivatives may be good for the brain and treat depression, according to Xia Zhang and colleagues at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, who found that a synthetic chemical similar to the active ingredient in marijuana promoted the growth of new brain cells in rats.

Scientists already knew that alcohol, nicotine and cocaine interfere with the production of new nerve cells in the mammalian hippocampus. They decided to find out what effect the synthetic cannabinoid HU210 has on the brain.

It turned out that large doses of HU210, which were given to rats twice a day for 10 days, increased the rate of formation of nerve cells by about 40%.

Previous studies had shown that the antidepressant fluoxetine also promotes cell growth, and it is this growth that produces the calming effect. Zhang wondered whether the cannabinoid had the same effect, and tested rats for behavioral changes. It did.

Canadian scientists say more research is needed before HU210 can be given to people.
