Smoking marijuana does not increase the risk of lung cancer05/24/2006
Frequent marijuana use is not associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, according to the authors of a large statistical study conducted in the United States. These findings contradict previous studies that found marijuana causes cancer more often than regular cigarettes. Researchers from the University of California studied the medical records of 611 patients with lung cancer and 601 patients with head and neck cancer. The control group included 1,040 healthy Americans. As a result, the scientists came to the conclusion that the most inveterate marijuana smokers suffer from cancer no more often than people who do not have bad habits. At the same time, scientists confirmed a 20-fold increase in the risk of lung cancer for people who smoke more than two packs of cigarettes a day. The study results were presented Tuesday at the American Lung Society conference. According to the coordinator of the research project, Dr. Donald Tashkin, the study involved US citizens under the age of 60, since this age group is the one most likely to regularly use "soft" drugs. According to the authors of previous studies, marijuana resin contains approximately 50% more carcinogens than tobacco resin, Tashkin notes. In addition, after smoking a standard joint, four times more resin settles in the smoker's lungs than after a regular cigarette. According to Tashkin, the lack of a carcinogenic effect in marijuana can be explained by the beneficial effects of tetrahydrocannabinol, which is part of its composition. This substance, which has a psychostimulating effect, can accelerate the processes of aging and cell death. It is possible that under the influence of tetrahydrocannabinol, cells that have undergone malignant transformation die off before they have time to multiply and form a tumor. According to experts, the results obtained by scientists should not be taken as an admission of the complete safety of marijuana, since it is known that frequent use of this drug leads to mental disorders and chronic bronchitis.
