Dutch hero-smoker in prison

Nol Van Schaik: currently in a Spanish prison awaiting extradition... Dutch coffee shop guru Nol Van Schaik jumped off a cliff in 1989. For 15 years, he defied the laws of gravity.

Three weeks ago, gravity finally defeated him.

In 1989, Van Schaik was part of a group smuggling Moroccan hashish from Morocco to the Netherlands via Spain and France. When his crew was caught by French agents near the French border, Van Schaik broke free, ran through the forest and jumped off a cliff.

Despite his wounds, he made it to the Netherlands, but France put him on an international wanted list and tried to smuggle him out of Holland. Van Schaika was detained and interrogated several times during the journey arranged for him by the authorities, while they decided what to do with him, whether to send him to France as the warrant demanded or not.

After Van Schaik's girlfriend, the Dutch beauty Maruska de Wortel, organized protest marches and attracted the attention of the press, the Dutch Minister of Justice intervened in the matter and announced to the French that Van Schaik would not be extradited to France.

Van Schaik thought he was finally safe. Van Schaik is the Netherlands' most vocal marijuana campaigner. In 2001, he pushed the envelope by opening the first coffee shop in England, The Dutch Experience. He later wrote a book about the history of coffee shops under the same title.

He was arrested and detained many times in England for his shop. While in custody there, the British authorities did not threaten to extradite him to France.

Van Schaik later moved to Spain. While continuing to run three excellent Willie Wortels coffee shops in Haarlem, the Netherlands, near Amsterdam, he also became Spain's national cannabis grower, posting weekly photos of his plants on his website, www.hempcity.net .

Van Schaik had planned to open a Spanish holiday resort and education centre for smokers. But when he recently left the Netherlands for Spain, security was tightened at the Spanish airport where he arrived. His passport was checked, he was checked on his computer, an old arrest warrant was found and Van Schaik was taken to a Madrid prison, where an extradition dispute began. If he is extradited to France, the sentence will be several years in prison.

According to Marcel de Wortel, a longtime colleague and manager of his coffee shops, lawyers and activists are working to free Van Schaik, but victory is not certain until a Spanish court ruling comes later this month.

"In the meantime, Van Schaik's worried family, friends and staff can only pray that he is sent back to the Netherlands and not to France," says Marcel.

When people ask Marcel what they can do to help Van Schaik, he suggests that "everyone go to Haarlem, the Netherlands, and smoke good weed in the Willie Wortels and Dutch Summer coffee shops."
