Mexico legalizes heroin, cocaine and marijuana

The Mexican authorities intend to legalize the possession of heroin, cocaine and marijuana in small quantities. The corresponding bill was sent to the country's President Vicente Fox for signature after being approved in parliament. The day before, the draft was approved by the country's Senate (upper house of parliament), reports (C) Associated Press.

Supporters of the bill argue that it will allow the police not to waste time on small drug addicts, but to focus on catching large drug dealers.

Meanwhile, if signed by the president and put into effect, the bill risks exacerbating relations between Mexico and the United States - American officials have already spoken out against allowing any relaxation in legislation concerning narcotic substances.

Let us recall that earlier another country practically legalized drug production – Bolivian President Evo Morales legalized coca cultivation. However, later the Bolivian leader called on farmers growing coca to comply with restrictions on its production.

In his opinion, this is the best way to support the country's government, moreover, "compliance with the established norms will be a slap in the face for the US government," says E. Morales.
