Campbell Wants to Tax Marijuana Sales

Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell has suggested that marijuana sales and income should be taxed to fund treatment for harder drugs.

Campbell, in his speech yesterday, proposed holding annual meetings of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association.

"Taxes collected from marijuana sales could be a source of treatment. Remember, the interaction between the marijuana business and the consumer is estimated at $6 billion annually - more than the timber industry," says Campbell.

The former Royal Mounted Police officer also said that collecting money without laundering it could support treatment and ensure better police performance in solving other crimes.

The mayor said he was calling for regular marijuana sales, similar to those for tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.

He outlined the situation in Amsterdam, highlighting the fact that cultivation and sales there are legal but regulated.

He said research had shown that far fewer Dutch people had ever tried weed than, say, Americans, and the number of schoolchildren using cannabis had fallen.

"The message is clear: legal, regulated marijuana sales can actually reduce use," he said.

Campbell spoke out against decriminalisation because it does not address the "real criminals" such as dealers and the crimes they commit.

"What would legal marijuana be? Not the best term by any means, but I think it's one of the most appropriate," he says.
