Repatriate Creates Medicine from Marijuana

25-year-old Hebrew University graduate student Natalia Kogan extracted active substances from cannabis that have the ability to stop the growth of cancer cells and received the Kaye Prize for this research, Israel21c reports.

These substances, kinoid cannabinoids, exhibit properties similar to those of a number of known anticancer drugs, the most famous of which is daunomycin. However, cannabinoids have proven to be much less toxic than daunomycin, which has a number of severe side effects.

In experiments on mice, Natalia Kogan observed a significant reduction in cancer tumors under the influence of the cannabinoids she obtained. These substances also demonstrated the ability to kill cancer cells in laboratory tests in vitro.

Natalia Kogan repatriated from Ukraine in 1995 and graduated with honors from the School of Pharmacy at the Hebrew University, receiving a second degree. She is currently studying for a doctorate. She conducts her research under the supervision of the renowned Israeli specialist in cannabis and its derivatives, Professor Mechoulam.
