Garage drug lords <eCannabis was grown in a garage using SMS messages>

In Novosibirsk, operatives of the Organized Crime Control Department identified a clandestine enterprise for growing a drug-containing plant - hemp. Specially equipped greenhouses where the crops ripened were located in permanent garages. The premises had round-the-clock lighting, heating, watering and even remote control systems. Two business organizers are charged with an article of the Criminal Code regarding the illegal cultivation of prohibited plants.

The police suspect two young specialists, graduates of a technical university in Novosibirsk, of illegally growing hemp. Having changed their profession from engineer to agronomist, the 23-year-old young people approached the matter thoroughly. They carefully studied articles on the Internet about the cultivation of such plants. Through the same Internet, the "farmers" also placed anonymous orders for the purchase of hemp seeds.

According to investigators, the young people had been growing the drug since November last year. They rented two permanent garages measuring 3x6 meters in the center of Novosibirsk. Ideal conditions were created for hemp bushes. Fluorescent lamps were installed in the room, which worked around the clock. Heating and watering systems were also equipped. For example, the irrigation system was a 200-liter barrel connected through a hose to many drippers.
But the detectives were especially struck by the remote control system for the "plantations". The agricultural engineers connected an electric timer to a mobile phone. The timer controlled the lighting, heating and watering. Any of the systems would be turned on after a corresponding SMS message was sent to the garage mobile phone. Switching off was also done via SMS messages.
Such technical delights were caused by the need for careful secrecy. The young people tried once again not to appear in front of their neighbors in the garages. In addition, the attackers had to equip the premises with blackout.

“Hemp required constant lighting,” said Pavel Feoktistov, senior investigator of the Organized Crime Control Department of the Central Internal Affairs Directorate of the Novosibirsk Region. “So the suspects installed double curtains on the garage doors and plugged all the cracks so that no one could see anything at night.

According to investigators, for the young people this was just the beginning of an underground business: aspiring agronomists were mastering the technology, looking for distributors, and planning to rent a third garage. Since November 2004, they managed to collect 3 harvests, each with almost 50 bushes. During the searches, the police seized seeds, sprouted roots, bushes, and ready-made dried “grass.”

Now agricultural work has been forcibly curtailed: the suspects face criminal liability at least under Article 231 of the Criminal Code “Illegal cultivation of prohibited plants containing narcotic substances.” Possible locations for the sale of hemp are now being identified.
