Greece: Blasphemy charges dropped against 'Life of Jesus' comic book author

An Athens appeals court on Wednesday cleared Austrian comic book author Gerhard Haderer of blasphemy charges, Greek media reported.

The appellate court thus overturned the decision of the court of first instance, which in January of this year sentenced the cartoonist to six months in prison.

The decision sparked protests from some European human rights organisations, who said the verdict violated the artist's right to artistic freedom.

In the book "The Life of Jesus", the distribution of which was also banned in Greece by a court decision, Jesus Christ is portrayed as a hippie who smokes marijuana and listens to "psychedelic" music from the sixties.
