Teen stole skull from grave to make marijuana 'bubbler'17.04.2005
In the US, police arrested a 17-year-old resident of Morrisville (Vermont) after it was discovered that he had broken into a crypt, opened a coffin and cut off the head of a corpse. Bail for his release was set at $100,000. Information about the outrageous vandalism was received by police from random witnesses. At first, the police did not believe what they heard. However, when they examined the Morrisville cemetery, they were convinced that an unknown person had indeed broken into one of the crypts, opened the coffin and stole the skull of the deceased. Soon, 17-year-old Nicholas Bakelew was arrested and charged with stealing the remains of a dead person and opening a grave. The teenager claimed his innocence in the crime. The police claim that they have irrefutable evidence against the suspect. In particular, a bag containing human remains and the tools that the criminal used to enter the crypt and open the coffin was found near the house where the suspect lives. The police informed the victim's widow about the vandalism. The woman was in shock and did not want to hear any details or particulars of the crime committed.
Police are not yet sure why the teenager needed the human skull, ABC News reports. Investigators believe he wanted to use the corpse's head to make a bell or "bubblator" for smoking marijuana.
This is not the first time that teenagers have tried to use corpses for their shocking fantasies. Two years ago in the US, two teenagers dug up the skeleton of Broadway actor Elmer Granden, who died in 1938. Taking the skeleton to a school party, they mockingly dressed it in a Darth Vader costume from Star Wars.
Michael Hertz, 18, and Michael Sossi, 17, of New York City, were charged with desecrating the skeleton of Elmer Granden. The teens also took two other skulls from a crypt in a Long Island cemetery. Police said the criminals stole the remains of dead people specifically to entertain their school friends at a party.
Detective Brian McMenemy said: "We have established that Hertz first put glasses on the skull, after which they dressed the skeleton in full Darth Vader garb." Elmer Granden, born in 1861, appeared on stage in several Broadway plays and also acted in silent films.
The investigation began after teachers overheard the boys bragging about their exploits. The actor's remains and two other skulls were found in a ditch where they had been dumped by criminals after a party. They were reburied.
