70% of Afghan drugs pass through Kazakhstan

Every year, 70% of all drugs produced in Afghanistan are transported across the Kazakh border - approximately 100-150 tons. Moreover, about 30% of them end up in Kazakhstan. This is stated in the "Report on the International Strategy for Combating Narcotics in 2005", published by the US State Department.

In 2004, over 19 tons of drugs were confiscated in Kazakhstan, which is 14% more than the year before. Wild hemp and coniferous trees occupy about 1.2 million hectares in the south of Kazakhstan, with the Chui Valley being the most "famous". About 97% of marijuana sold in Central Asia is produced in this region of Kazakhstan.

In addition, it is noted that since 1991 the number of drug addicts in Kazakhstan has increased 22 times. According to preliminary data, in 2004 there were 47 thousand drug addicts in Kazakhstan, two thirds of them were people under 30 years of age.

However, the country's authorities are trying to combat the drug mafia. Thus, Kazakhstan continues to work to achieve the goals of the UN Convention on the fight against the illegal cultivation of narcotic raw materials and the production of drugs on its territory. During the last annual operation "Poppy", more than 977 thousand square meters of land where poppy and hemp were illegally grown were destroyed.

It should also be noted that corruption is flourishing in the country. Thus, according to data published by the international organization Transparency International, Kazakhstan is in 122nd place in the world out of 146 countries in terms of corruption. This is stated in the report "The State of Corruption in the World in 2005".

Kazakhstan shared this position with Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. Among the post-Soviet countries, the lowest level of corruption was recorded in Estonia - 31st place, Georgia is in 133rd place, next to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

The least corrupt officials are those of Finland, New Zealand, Denmark, Iceland and Singapore. The United States is in 16th place. The highest level of corruption is found in Bangladesh and Haiti.

Transparency International has calculated that the budgets of all countries as a whole lose at least $400 billion when distributing public funds.
