Mexican drug traffickers shoot down military helicopter

In Mexico, a military helicopter crashed in the south of the country, killing 9 military personnel and 2 police officers. According to representatives of the country's security services, the helicopter could have been shot down as a result of fire from the ground, AFP reports. The tragedy occurred at a time when a squadron of several helicopters was flying over an area with illegal marijuana and opium poppy plantations.

An agricultural aviation helicopter that was spraying substances over plantations that prevented the cultivation of these plants was fired upon by unknown assailants from the ground. After this, another helicopter belonging to the Mexican Air Force began searching for the shooters, but soon after crashed to the ground.

Most likely, the helicopter was shot down. A search is underway for the shooters.

It should be noted that such incidents are not uncommon in Mexico. For example, in May 2004, a Turbo Commander 840 crashed while flying from the border city of Ciudad Juarez, with seven federal drug enforcement officers on board. All of the victims were members of a specially created group conducting reconnaissance flights to track drug trafficking routes. In 2003, two government helicopters spraying pesticides to destroy opium poppy plantations were shot down under similar conditions.
