Marijuana is considered harmless

A new study by psychiatrists at the University of California, San Diego, suggests that marijuana use does not cause permanent damage to the brain.

While alcohol causes such harm on a par with heavier drugs.

As Dr. Igor Grant, who led the research, stated, the results came as a big surprise to the scientists themselves.

Grant's team analyzed data from 15 published studies that looked at the long-term effects of regular marijuana use on neurocognitive abilities in adults. The studies involved 704 regular cannabis users and 484 non-users.

As Grant and his colleagues found, marijuana causes very little damage to memory and does not have long-term negative effects on reaction speed, attention, language, logic, or perceptual and motor abilities.

In California, growing and using marijuana is legal, but only for medical purposes.
