Sailors from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk used drugs on duty

Crew members of the US Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, homeported in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, have been accused of drug use, Japan Today reports. According to US military sources, the sailors used the synthetic drug MDMA, or ecstasy, and smoked marijuana while on combat duty.

Disciplinary action has been taken against seven of the fourteen crew members. Those responsible have been taken into custody and will be discharged from the US military.

The sailors said they bought the drugs in Tokyo, where they went for a weekend getaway. According to crew members, they bought the drugs in Ropponji, Tokyo's most active nightlife area, or at the port of Yokohama.

Last year, 37 crew members from two American cruisers also based in Yokosuka were arrested for drug use.
