The Opera House staged a drug ballet

03.02.2005

Tickets for the new performance of the Voronezh Opera "Angels of Death" are sold out instantly - the theater workers do not remember such spectator activity. The choreographer from St. Petersburg Oleg Ignatyev called his creation a modern ballet to techno music. The regional department of the Federal Drug Control Service approved the performance, and now Voronezh residents can not only partake of the beautiful, but also see the harmful consequences of drug use clothed in artistic form.

For our theatre, which has been performing classical masterpieces for many years, modern ballet is quite a bold experiment, especially since the theme of the performance is very relevant. Curious young people rushed to buy tickets after seeing the list of characters: Seducer, Deadly Virus, Straw, Hemp, Hashish, Marijuana, Heroin, Morphine, DJ, Amazon, Gladiator, Nightclub Hostess, OMON fighters...

The plot is based on a love triangle: a Boy, a Girl and a Seducer, who decides to destroy love with the help of Drugs and their leader - the Deadly Virus. First, he sets the Drugs on teenagers at a disco, then takes the drugged Girl to his "Elite Club". From time to time, either the Boy or the Girl come to their senses from a drugged sleep. Then it makes sense to quote the libretto by Oleg Ignatiev himself - you simply can't say it more vividly: "Teenagers are going to a party. There is irreconcilable hostility between the Seducer and the Boy. The teenagers are divided into two camps - and a fight begins. OMON officers burst in, disperse the den and put everyone in a cage. Young people wander like pale shadows under the watchful eye of the mental hospital doctors. The Boy and the Girl die. Deep sorrow takes hold of all who knew them, sorrow develops into a feeling of furious protest... The teenagers break out of the vicious circle."

The younger generation of viewers likes what's happening: no ballerinas in pointe shoes and snow-white tutus - their peers in ordinary jeans, T-shirts and bandanas take to the stage. No pas or fouettés - they dance so that Alla Dukhova's ballet would be envious. The seducer is dressed in an elegant black suit, but the Narkoti look more like punks. When the riot police in black masks (performed by students of the Voronezh Choreographic School) appear on stage and, waving batons, begin to drive the teenagers from the den into the cage, indignant whistles are heard in the audience. The teenagers on stage with lighters in their hands sing along with Tsoi "Our hearts demand changes", causing stormy applause in the audience. By the way, such an ovation for local performers has not been seen for a long time - in the finale, the audience thanked the artists standing with shouts of "Bravo!"

After watching the play, the MOЁshniks were convinced that discos are drug distribution centers, and night clubs are generally a den of debauchery. Everything seems clear with this... The only thing that was unclear was why after each scene of the teenagers meeting with Narkotiki, Rammstein music and Viktor Tsoi songs were played. Alas, we were unable to ask this question to the author of the production, Oleg Ignatyev - the master is currently working on his new productions in other cities.

The correspondents of "MOE!" talked with the artistic director of the Voronezh theatre ballet, Nabilya VALITOVA, about the work on the performance and its artistic value.

— The performance was done in less than a month, — said Nabilya Galievna. — We rehearsed without breaks or days off. Oleg Ignatyev works very infectiously, he demonstrates all the movements himself, performs tricks. At first, we wanted Ignatyev to stage Peer Gynt in Voronezh, but then we decided to take a more topical topic. Ignatyev had already staged Angels of Death in Omsk, and this performance was a great success there. We took a videotape, watched it and decided to transfer the modern ballet to our stage. And young people flocked to the theater: the premiere was sold out, tickets for the following shows were sold out. And many of these viewers had no idea where the Voronezh Opera House was located.

How did you manage to stage the play in such a record short time?

— The premiere was in question until the very end. We almost stopped halfway because the theater did not have the funds to design the production. Somehow we raised money, rented some of the scenery from the Drama Theater, bought modern lighting and music equipment. Office furniture (we had to buy chairs for the scenes in the play) and the riot police uniforms were very expensive. Two gurneys for the actors playing the roles of orderlies had to be ordered from companies selling medical equipment. But jeans were bought in a neighboring second-hand store, and then the ballerinas decorated them with rhinestones themselves.

Didn't the list of characters confuse you?

— At first it confused me. But I have no idea which of the dancers is Anash and which is Poppy Straw. Unfortunately, the audience knows this better than we do. The performance was accepted by representatives of the drug control service — they found nothing suspicious and gave the go-ahead for the premiere.

Do you think this production can save someone from drug addiction?

— What if? Maybe the youth will see what all this leads to: a police cell, a madhouse, and someone will get scared... We fight the problem of drug addiction as best we can — with artistic methods.

Valeria ROSHCHEVKINA, employee of the press service of the regional department of the Federal Drug Control Service:

— Our activities include not only the fight against drug trafficking, but also measures to prevent their distribution. Since drug addiction is growing in our region, especially among teenagers and young people, we ideologically supported this production, because the content of the play is clearly anti-drug. This year we plan to organize healthy lifestyle courses in schools and universities. It is important for us that young people learn about the terrible consequences that drug use can lead to from various sources. The theater presented this problem in artistic form.
