Marijuana Well

For the first time, American officials have found evidence of the use of oil wells for money laundering. The US federal government has seized 43 oil wells in northwestern Pennsylvania whose owners were laundering money from marijuana sales.

"The Shaboom oil company, the owner of the field, was organized in 1988 specifically for the purpose of laundering profits from drug trafficking," experts from the competent authorities believe. The investigation has been going on since 1981 and is connected with the name of a major drug dealer of the 70s, Paul Hindelang. After serving time in prison, he made a successful career in the telecommunications industry. But in 1998, Hindelang again came to light, planning to invest $50 million in the drug business. Security service agents followed the money from the Channel Islands through Monaco and Switzerland to oil fields in Pennsylvania. The investigation into money laundering through oil wells did not result in charges. Officials say that one of the Shaboom executives cooperated with the security service.

The US federal government has now become the temporary owner of the oil wells, which were preliminarily valued at $1 million. Officials plan to conduct a full assessment and sell the oil wells at auction, Gazeta writes.
