Prosecutor and Talk Show Host Promote Medicinal Marijuana

06/16/2004

New York - Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau has joined television talk show host Montel Williams in supporting the legalization of marijuana for medical use in New York.

"Marijuana should be available to those whose pain and suffering it can alleviate," the district attorney said. "There is no reason why marijuana cannot be used medically. It is another weapon in the medical arsenal."

Morgenthau said he supports a marijuana legalization bill introduced in the state legislature by state Rep. Richard Gottfried.

Williams, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, choked back tears as he said he smokes marijuana to ease the pain in his legs caused by the crippling neurological disease. "There are days when I don't want to get out of bed," he said.

Morgenthau said he became an advocate for medical marijuana after doing research and talking to his daughter, a physicist who treats drug addicts. He asked her if marijuana really has medical uses, and she said, "Of course."

The prosecutor said patients using marijuana could reduce effects such as nausea after chemotherapy, loss of appetite and tissue wasting after taking some medications, and symptoms of glaucoma and multiple sclerosis.

Williams, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former Navy officer for 12 years, said he began using marijuana on the recommendation of his doctor. He said he tried other painkillers, but they did not control his tremors and spasms and only caused side effects. “Marijuana helps me,” he claims.

Williams, after winning an Emmy in 1991 for his talk show, said marijuana did not impair his ability to function. He said he had become almost immune to its euphoric effects, but still benefited from its therapeutic properties.

Morgenthau and Williams noted that 10 U.S. states already allow medical marijuana use: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. Williams also said medical marijuana use is legal in Canada, Britain and Holland.

"Why can doctors in California relieve my pain, but doctors in New York can't?" Williams asks. "In Canada and California, I'm a typical prescription marijuana user."
