Get high, fly and fight for the trophy

Bird fights involving bulbuls, 20 cm long birds, are an integral part of Bihu celebrations in Hajo. Participants train the birds two weeks before the event.

Over the two days of the festival, which ends on Saturday, 300 'smoked' birds are coaxed into fighting each other by their temporary owners for a prize and cash reward of Rs 1,000.

Locals catch birds in the forests using bamboo traps, with the permission of the village elder, Chinmoy Das.

For 20 days, the birds are fed an intoxicating concoction containing small amounts of marijuana along with other herbs, bananas, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon.

"We feed the birds regularly to make them stronger and tougher for fighting," says village headman Haricharan Kalita.

The birds' legs are tied and then the birds are drugged and forced to fight each other in the vicinity of the Hindu castle.

"This is part of our ancient tradition and people come to the village from far and wide to witness these annual fights," says local resident Ambar Bora.

Once the fights are over, the birds are released. "We handle the birds with care throughout the festival and once the festival is over, we release them," says Hiranya Das, one of the organisers of this unique bird fight.

The number of bird fights, however, is decreasing along with the decline of a species known as the Bulbul, which is approaching extinction.

"Previously, we had 800 to 1,000 birds participating in the fights. But now the birds are disappearing and this year about 300 birds are participating in the festival," says another organizer.
