As Oleg Sedov, CEO of Amphora Trading and Publishing House CJSC, told a Fontanka correspondent, today at about 1:00 p.m. an employee of the Federal Drug Control Service for St. Petersburg and the region came to the company's office. He handed Sedov a summons, which ordered him to appear at the department the next day in connection with the initiation of a case on an administrative offense. Sedov was also informed that if he failed to appear at the Federal Drug Control Service, he would be taken there by force. The employee of the department notified the publishing house director that a decision had been made to transfer the case to court, in connection with which Sedov would be questioned tomorrow. During the conversation it became clear that the reason for initiating the administrative offence case was Sergei Kuznetsov's psychedelic detective story "Seven Petals", published in a print run of 5,000 copies. The novel takes place in 1994. On a summer day in 1994, two young women die mysteriously almost simultaneously in Moscow: one runs out of her house naked and is immediately hit by a car, and the other suffocates after swallowing a brand of LSD. At first glance, there is nothing in common between the deaths of a crazy dreamer and the wife of a new Russian, complete strangers to each other. And yet, some deep commonality is still found in them. Not only are both deaths essentially murders, although they do not look like such. The accidental witnesses to both crimes turned out to be young informals, adherents of the culture of psychedelic substances, and that both were investigated by Yulik Gorsky, a cunning guru in a wheelchair. The true commonality of these two murders lies in the general formula, a hermetic rebus, mystically connected with the number seven and the fairy tale about the seven-flowered flower. Kuznetsov's novel was published by Amphora early last year, and, according to Sedov, contains neither recipes for making drugs nor addresses where they can be purchased. Therefore, after the departure of the UFSNK employee, "Seven Petals" was sent to the Russian Interior Ministry for linguistic examination. It was thanks to the conclusion of this examination that Amphora managed to save another of its books, Tom Wolfe's "Electro Kool-Aid Acid Test" about the life of Ken Kesey, from a sales ban six months ago. If the court issues a ruling to hold the publishing house administratively liable, then Amphora faces a fine of 500 minimum wages and confiscation of the print run. According to Sedov, such trends frighten publishers. The fact is that about two weeks ago in Moscow, the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation provided owners of bookstores with a recommendation in the form of a list of books that the service did not recommend selling. By the way, this year in Ulyanovsk, during a raid, employees of the State Drug Control Service seized the book “Marijuana”, incense sticks “Cannabis”, as well as music discs promoting drugs. State Drug Control operatives equated them to hidden advertising of drug addiction. Incense sticks “Cannabis”, withdrawn from sale, by the way, can be easily purchased in the online store. But, according to narcologists, the sticks themselves do not bring much harm. A batch of books was also seized from the shelves of Samara stores by employees of the Federal Drug Control Service for the Samara Region. Among those banned from sale were three books by the notorious Kirill Vorobyov, who writes under the pseudonym Bayan Shiryanov and is on trial in Moscow on charges of promoting pornography, as well as one of the novels by American authors Alexander and Ann Shulgina.
