Cannabis-Based Painkiller Useless for Multiple Sclerosis10.04.2008 The pain-relieving effect of Sativex spray, which contains natural cannabis components, is no better than the placebo effect. Such results were obtained during the third phase of clinical trials of the drug in patients with multiple sclerosis, reports the Daily Mail.British company GW Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Sativex, conducted a double-blind, randomized trial involving 339 patients with multiple sclerosis. About half of the participants taking the drug experienced a reduction in pain intensity of at least 30%. However, people taking a placebo (an inactive drug) had almost the same results, the researchers reported. GW Pharmaceuticals representatives attributed the result to an “unexpectedly strong placebo effect.” Two more phase 3 clinical trials of Sativex are currently ongoing. The cannabis-based spray is being tested as a treatment for spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis and as a pain reliever for cancer patients. The manufacturers are hopeful that the new trials will be more successful and that Sativex will be approved by European regulatory authorities for the treatment of these conditions within the next two years. Sativex is currently approved by Health Canada. It is also available in the UK as an unlicensed drug, imported from Canada.
