Marijuana hits the teeth, especially the gums10.03.2008 Frequent marijuana smoking triples the risk of developing periodontitis at an early age, New Zealand scientists believe. Earlier, the same research group confirmed the risk between the premature development of gum disease and smoking regular cigarettes.The study, conducted by researchers at the Dunedin Dental School in New Zealand, involved 900 young people who were followed from the ages of 18 to 32. The researchers compared reports of drug use by participants at the ages of 18, 21, 26 and 32 and compared these data with dental examinations conducted in the last years of follow-up. Signs of incipient periodontitis were identified in 4% of participants who had never smoked weed. Among young people who smoked marijuana from 1 to 40 times a year, this figure was 12%, and in the subgroup of those who used the drug more than 40 times a year - 26%. "Gum disease developed in a quarter of participants who used marijuana regularly between the ages of 18 and 32. We were surprised to see that the increase in risk was somewhat significant," said study leader Murray Thomson. He points out that the statistical link between marijuana smoking and gum disease remained after controlling for factors such as smoking regular cigarettes and the amount of plaque on teeth, a good indicator of oral hygiene.
